Slow Breakfast

One of the things I love most about days off and weekends is the ability to slow down and make a special breakfast.

Most mornings I chug a smoothie as I run around getting cats and humans fed while not even really thinking about what I'm eating. Today I was reminded of the chill mornings in Scotland and decided oats were in order.

Using steel cut oats, freshly ground nutmeg and an authentic wooden spurtle, the soft "put, put, put" sound and comforting aroma of spiced oatmeal filled the air. I layered homemade chokecherry jam, almond butter and a dollop of plain yogurt in one of my favorite bowls to finish off the AB&J oats and then got started on a fancy coffee.

Most days I drink Americanos, just water and espresso. I love being able to taste the bitter espresso and not have it overpowered by loads of syrupy sugar.

Today I was wanting comforting flavors though, so I made a latte.

My mom bought us this espresso machine for our 10th wedding anniversary.

Whenever I make espresso drinks I think of her.

Steam froths the milk and brews a perfect double shot.

With breakfast complete, it's time to sit with the cat and read a new book while I put off voting just a little bit longer.
